St. Vincent de Paul St. Mary Magdalene Conference is a branch of an international Catholic organization begun in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a student of Sorbonne University in Paris. He was a humble and compassionate man who organized his friends to assist the poor in his area. They became known as Vincentians, after their chosen patron saint St. Vincent de Paul. The Society came to the United States in 1845 when a conference was formed in St. Louis, Missouri. Its first presence in Georgia was in 1903 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Atlanta. We now have 68 Conferences in Georgia of which two are in Newnan, and 47,400 throughout the world with over 650,000 members. We strive to grow spiritually through direct person-to-person aid to the needy. |

Through direct home visits by two Vincentians, we review the requirements of the needy and determine if we can assist spiritually or through direct aid. Financial or direct aid may take the form of Rent /Mortgage, Car Payments, Electric Power, Gas/Propane, Medical Supplies, Doctors, Dentists, Prescriptions, Water, Gasoline, Auto Insurance, Auto Repair, Furniture (Bedding), Clothing Vouchers, Temporary Housing, or Food. St. Vincent de Paul has been asked along with Salvation Army to help implement the FRESH START (FS) program. This program is designed by the Federal Government to stimulate the economy through direct aid to the poor. The state of Georgia was given 10 million dollars to be dispersed directly to property owners, and power companies to aid overdue bills and to help people stay in their homes. We collect data from the client, and submit it to the United Way. They in turn pay the vendor. Bills must be overdue to apply and there must be children under age 18 in the household. |
